Sample Intro Paragraph 1:

Here, the HOOK is also providing BACKGROUND INFORMATION!

The TRANSITIONS and CONTEXT help to NARROW the topic so that we can finally get to our THESIS, the most specific part of the intro that tells our audience EXACTLY what you're going to be talking about and what your position is.

Body Paragraphs

Translating your THESIS into your TOPIC SENTENCES for your body paragraphs:

Thesis:
Pizza is the best food in the world because (1) it is meant to be shared with others, (2) you can put any toppings you want on it, and (3) it is good option for any situation.

Topic Sentence 1:
Pizza is the best food in the world because it is meant to be shared with others.

Topic Sentence 2:
Pizza is the best food in the world because you can put any toppings you want on it.

Topic Sentence 3:
Pizza is the best food in the world because it is good option for any situation.

Structuring Your Body Paragraphs:

Though they use different words, the structure is similar to our CREE formula

CR - Claim + Reasoning = Topic Sentence
  • this is a restatement of our position/opinion from our thesis plus our reasoning for ONLY THAT PARAGRAPH
  • since this is a body paragraph, we don't use 3 reasons like in our thesis.  We just do the ONE reason that we'll be discussing in this particular paragraph.
E - Evidence
  • this should come from the text, video, or other outside source.  There are NO OPINIONS OR SPECULATION here!
E - Explanation
  • remember this is HOW our evidence shows that our claim (our position or opinion) is true!
